Coe holds a BA in English from Roanoke College and an MFA in painting from Maryland Institute College of Art. He began painting seriously while working as curator in a small museum on the Eastern Shore and teaching at Chesapeake College.  His work has been featured in American Artist magazine and the book 100 Plein Air Painters of the Mid-Atlantic, and shown regularly in galleries in Chicago, Houston and Baltimore. He works in oils, preferably en plein air, painting the lengthening shadows and lowering light at the end of day or the softer light of early morning.
